My Strategy For Keeping My Wardrobe Current Without Breaking The Bank

Hey friends!!

I’m here today with two of my very favourite topics: fashion and finance (okay, mostly fashion…). While I could easily spend hundreds of hours each season googling and dreaming about what I’d like for my dream closet to hold, I’m far too practical to take any major steps in the direction of actually HAVING said closet.

What I choose to do instead – and what has actually become my preferred method of closet-wrangling – is to invest heavily into my basics, do my best to take care of them and then spend very strategically on a few new, trendy pieces each season. Not only is this ultimately much better for my wallet, its also super beneficial to the planet. Rather than having to discard large chunks of your closet which have gone out of fashion, most of your wardrobe will made up of timeless staples that can be worn for years. This way of dressing can also keep you from looking like you’re overdoing the season’s trends. A super current jacket thrown over a plain t-shirt and jeans with suede booties will have you looking totally stylish, yet still classic.

I begin by identifying what I currently have in each category of clothing (tops, bottoms, dresses, shoes, outerwear, accessories, etc) and quickly run through my closet to get rid of anything I’m not wearing or loving. I find which categories I could add some pieces to and I start there. Usually, I set a budget for myself for what I can spend each season, so the number of items I pick up depends on how much everything costs. I try to look for deals. If I’m trying to keep my budget low, I’ll go for more accessories like hats, scarves or shoes that pack a punch or I’ll hunt for amazing deals on outerwear which can be worn over many of my basics to get the most wearability for my dollar.

How do you upgrade your wardrobe each season?

Steal Her Style: Jeanne Damas

Hello friends!

Happy Tuesday and welcome back to my blog! Today I wanted to show a little appreciation for everyone’s favourite modern Parisian style muse, Jeanne Damas.

As soon as I stumbled across Jeanne, I fell in love with her classy, effortless style. Whenever I find a new fashion inspiration, I try to break down her look into common pieces that are easy to replicate. Lucky for us all, Jeanne, tends to mention in interviews how simple her style really is. In her words, she knows what works for her and she sticks with it.

Jeanne’s, style staples include: high-rise vintage style straight leg jeans, high-rise straight leg trousers, low-cut patterned blouses, silk button-downs, t-shirts, blazers, heeled booties, patterned summer dresses with sandals or espadrilles and of course, her signature red lip.

Luckily for all of us, Jeanne relies heavily on her well-chosen basics. These become the staple of her wardrobe and allow her to mix and match, knowing that every piece she owns is not only flattering on her, but also completely cohesive with her coveted signature look.

Jeanne is all about balance. She mixes masculine and feminine. She wears a bold red lip with no other makeup. She wears an amazing evening dress with a loose messy bun. The undone nature of her look keeps her looking unbelievably stylish while also remaining completely effortless.

Though she’s widely regarded as a total muse and inspiration to women all over the world, Jeanne says that her style is largely not about clothing, but about confidence. She’s not after the perfect outfit, she’s much more concerned about feeling confident in herself, no matter what she wears.

Basics: Must-Haves To Make Dressing Simple – PT 4 PANTS

Hi Friends!

Long time no talk. Like.. really long time. I’m sorry. But, I’m excited to be here today to share with you my take on must have (non-jean) bottoms for super easy dressing! This is a category is one that took me a while to develop an appreciation for. Growing up, I was a jeans all the way kinda girl. But having gone through business school and a short stint in corporate finance, I was forced into the world of dressier pant options. Believe it or not, office wear can be some of the most versatile pieces in your wardrobe. Let me show you what I mean.

Meet the Jallade Pant by Aritzia. This is my all-time favourite pair of non-denim pants. “Why?” you might ask… Well, if you have an hourglass figure like me, you’ll likely know the struggle of finding a pair of office-appropriate pants that can accommodate hips, thighs, booty AND fit properly at the waist. As a girl who CANNOT wear anything low or mid-waisted, dressier pant options are few and far between.

These pants fit like a glove, flatter all the right places and come in countless high-quality colours and fabrics. At around $130 a pop, I can’t complain. They are shown here in the colour “sky captain”.

As far as styling these babies goes, of course they will look unbelievable paired with a simple white button down and some nude heels. This rich deep blue colour (which I’m planning to purchase next) will look so crisp with a beautiful white top. However, It would also look amazing with a patterned blouse or a grey sweater with coordinating heels, pointed toe flats or loafers. The possibilities here really are endless.

To take these pants double-duty and wear them in a casual setting, pair them with a loose, tucked white tee, a classic jean jacket and a pair of white sneakers. Top off the easy look with a cute baseball cap. Another cute option could be a cream coloured cami worn with brown sandals for a summer date night look or a black turtleneck, black heeled booties and a black leather moto jacket for a winter date night look. Like I said, the possibilities are endless.

As I’ve probably mentioned before, I love to find amazing basic pieces that fit well and flatter my curves, then buy them in a bunch of different colours. I mix and match them with more stand-out, unique pieces to change up their look. Not only does this save you time and frustration from jumping from store to store, dressing room to dressing room trying on the entire mall, it allows you to feel confident in knowing that SOMETHING will always work out on those days when you feel you have nothing to wear. It happens to the best of us and these pants are my go-to.

Well friends… somehow I always go into these posts with the intention of writing something short and sweet. This time, I let my apparent passion for… Jallade pants? … get the better of me and I wrote you a short novel. Anyways, I hope his helped you. The moral of the story is.. buy these pants.

WARDROBE REFRESH: How $112 at Boohoo Buys a Bunch of New Outfits

Hey friends!

I thought it might be fun – since we’ve been talking so much about basics over here – to show you how I love to mix and match those pieces with stand-out statement pieces to create endless amounts of fresh, new outfits. Once you have your basic wardrobe down, its SO SO easy to create loads of different outfits with just a few new statement additions. I think I’ll do this from time to time with pieces from different online stores and call it the “wardrobe refresh” series. Today, I went to boohoo.com and found a TON of cute pieces to play around with. For this post, I’ve narrowed it down to 3 different pieces for a total of CAD $112. Heres what I came up with…

First, this flirty summer bodysuit is just adorable. The halter neck and ruffles keep it super light and fun while the white colour makes it SO easy to wear! Pair this with black, blue or white jeans topped with a cute jean or army jacket, a jean skirt and sandals or a leather skirt and heels for a night time look.

Bodysuit ($27)

Next up is this gorgeous embroidered mini skirt. This would pair perfectly with the bodysuit above and a cute pair of heels. It can also easily be dressed down and worn with a black, white or grey t-shirt and a jean jacket with some cute scrappy sandals. Another idea is to wear it with a black lace cami and top it with a leather jacket and black heels or booties for a going out look.

Skirt ($43)

Finally, we have these cute little gingham sandals. I love these because 1) they have a low block heel which will make them comfortable and practical and 2) the gingham print will add a little pop of interest to an otherwise basic outfit. The wrap around tie detail will also add a fun, flirty vibe. I’d wear these with the bodysuit above and any pair of jeans or a jean skirt, I’d wear them with a little white dress and a jean jacket, or even with an all black look for nighttime.

Shoes ($42)

Whenever I shop, I love to think of all the possible ways that I can wear an item before I commit to it. My rule of thumb is that I need to be able to wear it with 3 different outfits that I already have in my wardrobe in order to buy it. This ensures that I get the most bang for my buck (and a bunch of new outfits!).

Let me know what you think of my little series!
